I am based in Essex, UK and portraitI've been interested in photography since the age of 11. I even considered taking it up professionally, but the reality of earning a living kicked in and I went into engineering instead! After a few other changes in career, the last of which was "digital libraries", I'm now retired from British higher education. In theory this gives me more time to develop my interest in photography, combining it with my other interests in the natural and man-made landscape. In Theory! In practice lots of other things have to be done too.

Over the years my photography has become less factual and more interpretive. I share an interest in gardens with my wife, and I am keen to introduce an element of the Japanese aesthetic into my photography. I have a preference for black and white photography, though as you will see from this Web site, I use colour where I think it's important. Three of the photographers I most admire are Michael Kenna, Stuart Redler and Norman Carver.

I''m not a gear freak (though my wife might disagree!), but I use a variety of equipment and formats: digital equipment is standard for me these days (Sony and Nikon full-frame, plus a Canon point-and-shoot). I only use 35mm film for special effects (e.g. EFKE Aura infrared film). Since moving house a few years ago I don't have a darkroom, but process any films in daylight tanks then scan. My favourite tool is Lightroom but Capture One and Photoshop also get used. For large format photography I have an old Linhof Technica 5x4" with Schneider and Fuji lenses, though I also take some 5x7" and 10x8" black & white mainly for alternative processes.
